The Wednesday Wars by Gary D. Schmidt

Holling Hoodhood thinks his teacher, Mrs. Baker, dislikes him because he is the only student left in her class on Wednesday afternoons. As the school year goes on, he discovers that she is helping him grow through Shakespeare, challenges, and new experiences. Along the way, Holling learns about friendship, family, courage, and finding his own voice during a time of change.
